[Parenthood] 10 Ways to Thrive, Not Just Survive

Becoming a parent can bring on a whirlwind of changes…

While it is very rewarding, parenthood can also be challenging. Many times we can feel as if we are just trying to make it through the day and survive but what if we want to thrive? If your goal is to thrive in parenthood and not just survive, here are some tips to help you achieve that:

  1. PRIORITIZE SELF-CARE

Remember, taking care of yourself is not selfish; it's essential for your well-being and your ability to care for your child. Set aside time for self-care activities, whether it's reading a book, going for a walk, or enjoying a hobby. A happy and healthy parent is better equipped to provide the same for their child.

  2. BUILD A SUPPORT SYSTEM

Don't be afraid to lean on friends and family for support. Parenthood is a team effort, and having a support system in place can make a world of difference. If friends and family aren’t an option for you, give yourself permission to outsource! Hiring help is completely acceptable and can help you get tasks completed, allowing you to have more time to bond with your family. Having fewer things to worry about can also improve your mood by reducing stress. Reach out for help when needed, and allow yourself to cherish moments with your family!

  3. STAY ORGANIZED

Parenthood often means juggling multiple responsibilities. Stay organized with schedules, to-do lists, and calendars. Streamlining your daily routines can reduce stress and free up more time for the things that matter most. Having a shared family calendar and to-do list can help everyone stay informed on what is happening and help partners find ways to help each other achieve their family goals.

  4. EMBRACE FLEXIBILITY

As you have probably already realized, parenting rarely goes according to plan. Be open to adapting and adjusting to unexpected situations. Flexibility allows you to navigate the ups and downs of parenthood with resilience and a positive attitude.

  5. LEARN FROM MISTAKES

Parenting comes with its share of trials and errors. Remember, this is new to you and new to your baby! Instead of dwelling on mistakes, view them as learning opportunities. Embrace the lessons that come with the challenges. Mistakes do not make you a bad parent—what is most important is what you do after.

  6. PRACTICE PATIENCE

Patience is a virtue that can serve you well in parenting. Children require time to learn, grow, and make mistakes. Take a deep breath, stay calm, and offer guidance and support with patience. Developing patience early in parenting will help make your parenting journey more peaceful as your children get older.

  7. CELEBRATE SMALL VICTORIES

Parenthood is full of small victories, from your baby's first smile to their first steps. Take time to celebrate these moments. Acknowledge your and your partner’s achievements as a parent as well. Making the most out of these moments helps fortify your family and creates memories for the future.

  8. SEEK KNOWLEDGE AND GUIDANCE

Parenthood doesn't come with a manual, but there are plenty of resources available to help you navigate the challenges. Whether it's parenting books, online communities, or professional advice, seek knowledge and guidance to strengthen your parenting skills. Having the right information and resources will help build your confidence in parenting.

  9. MAINTAIN PERSPECTIVE

Parenthood is a long-term commitment. Remember: your love and dedication shape your child's future. The rewards of parenthood extend beyond daily struggles.

  10. PRACTICE GRATITUDE

As a parent, it's important to take a few moments each day to reflect on the joys that come with parenthood. Some days it may be easier to list the positive moments, while on other days, it may take a little more effort. Nevertheless, it's essential to try! Practicing gratitude can help you focus on the positive aspects of parenting and find happiness in everyday moments.

Thriving in parenthood does not require you to be perfect!

Rather, it's all about embracing the journey with an open heart and a positive mindset. You can transform the challenges of parenthood into opportunities for growth and joy by practicing self-care, building a support network, staying organized, and maintaining patience. So, don't shy away from the adventure of parenting, and you'll find that thriving as a parent is completely within your reach.
